Position Purpose:
The Head Veterinary Technician directs, plans and coordinates technical staff and veterinary assistants to promote greater efficiency and quality of care for patients.

This is a full-time position with a salary range of $35/hr to $37/hr.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:

Licensed Veterinary Technician responsibilities
  • Administration of intravenous drugs and anesthetic agents, including complete understanding of the basic mechanics of an anesthesia machine.
  • Maintain the working order of all anesthetic machines/dental machines and laboratory equipment
  • Ability to prep patients for surgery and to assist in surgery if necessary. This would be at the Drs. discretion
  • Proficiency in aseptic technique, including cleaning, sterilizing, packing and storage of surgical instruments, drapes and gowns.
  • Familiarity with radiographic techniques/positioning and radiation safety. Maintaining radiology exposure reports.
  • Proficiency in proper animal restraint and using Fear Free methods.
  • Ability to draw blood and place catheters (jugular and femoral catheterization a plus).
  • Experienced in laboratory procedures such as proper blood and specimen handling, reading of fecal assays and urinalysis and cytology.
  • Monitoring of all patients and able to identify medical emergencies.
  • Oversee and help to maintain cleanliness in the kennel, prep room, surgery areas and exam rooms and  stocking as needed.
  • Controlled drug log recording and maintenance of record. Manage controlled drug inventory and safe keeping of these drugs.
  • Inventory management. Maintain working inventory of the hospital. Strive to find the best prices for the hospital. Order and receive products. Create purchase orders and electronic requisitions and submit to accounting department in a timely manner.
  • Client communication and education. This includes taking phone calls, addressing owner concerns and education of owners.
  • Assist Dr. during appointments including but not limited to taking complete medical history, drawing up of vaccines, and at times administering medications or vaccines as directed by the Veterinarian.
  • Basic understanding or the ability to learn veterinary software programs.
  • Ability to take client payments and assist with front-of-house duties as needed

Management responsibilities
  • Supervising and training Veterinary Technicians and veterinary assistants in their performance of technical tasks and client education duties.
  • Scheduling of veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants in cooperation with the veterinary medical supervisor.
  • Maintaining liaison with the Adoption Center Manager to ensure that all resident animals that require medical care and supervision are receiving said care.
  • Maintaining accuracy of all controlled substance drug logs.
  • Oversee OTC sales of veterinary products
  • Oversee completion of daily checklists and weekly maintenance logs (cleaning, kennel roster, tx sheets) before the end of the workday.
  • Make recommendations to veterinary medical supervisor concerning personnel matters, staffing needs, promotions, re-assignment, hours of work or other status changes regarding veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants.
  • Provide direct on-the-job training to new veterinary technicians and assistants.
  • Discuss disciplinary actions when appropriate with veterinary medical supervisor and assist with follow-through.
 
Qualifications: 
  • Current NYS license.
  • Five years of clinical experience.
  • Knowledge concerning related federal and state animal health laws and regulations regarding OSHA and controlled drugs.
